Which of these two chucks? Or neither?

Post by Evyn »

Hi,

I have been offered my choice of one of the following two chucks. Brand new, and at a good price. A chap I know ended up with both, but only needs one of them, and is willing to let one go for $50.

Which one, if either, would you recommend for pipe making?

I would think either chuck is suitable for turning stummels. I'd suggest getting jaws custom made from Trent Rudat or Steve (smokingdawg). The stock jaws are intended for a round piece and you don't get much purchase on a square block with them as just the edges of the jaws touch the squared piece of briar.

I have 2 of the midi chucks. They're not top shelf, but they will do most everything you will ever need to do, and do it well. I have the jaws from Steve that I keep on one, and the other one gets used for anything else that requires a chuck for turning. Shop around and you should be able to find them for less than $100. Check woodturning suppliers and ebay. I paid $60 shipped for one of them brand new on ebay in an auction.

Just noticed that you said you're getting one for $50. Good deal. I would not pass that up.

I don't know what your budget is but also take a look at the Australian-made Vicmarc chucks. I have a pair of them and I can attest to the fact that they are of superior quality.
Available at Craft Supply and other outlets.

Edit: I re-read your post. $50.00 for either of the ones that you cited is a steal. Get tower jaws.

Thanks, oklahoma red. I'll keep the Vicmarc brand in mind for when my ship comes in.
