That design is pretty similar to the slack belt sander I made, but I'd suggest putting some form of dust collection on it. Otherwise, the dust builds up on the other side of the belt and it starts to slip on the wheels.

Yes, I agree with the dust collection. That is in the plan for my next add to the shop. I will take some pictures of the back when I get home tonight. I got the idea from a duck decoy sight.

3.5 amp motor will overheat quickly under significant load. Also, it's smaller than you think from the pics. Difficult to see contact area, too, meaning lots of "blind push then check result" stuff, which is inherently imprecise and quickly gets tiring. In short, that machine is not a good choice for pipe shaping tasks.

For small tool making, squaring blocks to fit in a lathe chuck (if they're not too crooked), and so forth, it would probably work.

Georges "blind push and check" remark sums up most of my dissatisfaction with my little belt sander so today while in the shop, I mounted the sander tilted forward about 75-80 degrees.
Things are much better now. I can see the contact area and am getting much better removing material confidently.
I also purchased the belts that Jeremiah recommended.
