Help with a shopping list

Post by Briarfox »

Well It's time to buy some new Bits for the lathe, I know many of you have recommended getting stock and making my own bits, but I'm not to comfortable with that.

So what do you guys recommend for lathe bits? What supplier?

Also, I've been making my own edge safe files out of cheap harbor freight files. What would guys recommend for a good set of edge safe files?

I'm not sure if you mean drill bits or lathe cutting tools, but I like getting much of my workshop stuff from these guys: http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRHM

For most items you have a choice of less expensive imports or quality USA made.

Most guys will recomend Nicholson files as amongst the best quality. I use the Flat Files which have a safe edge, but I still run the safe edge over my belt grinder/sander just to be sure it realy is smooth and "safe". http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INPDFF?PMPAGE=285&PMCTLG=00

If you primarily intend to do small turning, these 1/4" holders are relatively cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/1-4-5PC-INDEXABLE-C ... m153.l1262
