How much of a PITA would it be to move a 10" drill press back and forth from inside my house, to out on the deck when I want to use it? :? I really, really want to drill my own pipes, and it just ain't happening with a hand drill. Looks like presses run somewhere in the neighborhood of 65lbs or so, so I think it's doable, but would it be worth it? This may be a moot point if my wife gets this job she's applied for and we move to Atlanta. The house we have lined up there has shop space, so I'm just biding my time. Hard to wait for the unknown though.

that is the size i have. best thing i could recommend if you need to move it every time like that is get a fairly small cart/table on wheels (preferably wheels that can be locked into place so it don't roll on you when you use it) to mount it too. small enough to roll through doorways. shouldn't be too much of a hassle if you did that.

I move my little one all over the place, no issues. But I am strong like Ox.

The only problem I have ever had with moving them is not that they are too heavy it's that they are very top heavy. Just be careful where you place your hands to lift it so it doesn't topple over and you'll have no problem. The roll around cart suggested by someone is a great idea though.

Just bolt it down to the kitchen counter. When your wife comes home, fold your arms across your chest and say "I'm a pipemaker!"

Let us know how it goes..... :D

LOL Here's how it will go, She comes in, and goes :jawdrop: then procedes to :bangin: :twak: :takethat: before tossing me to the curb and running me down in my own SUV :runover:

I've already taken over the computer room, so that would be the last straw :endofmankind:

Standing drill presses are usually supposed to be mounted on a piece of plywood for stability. You could mount a couple of wheels on the front or back so that when you tip it, it will roll on the wheels. That way you can still move it easily on the wheels but when upright it remains solid. Just a thought.

Actually this is just a little bench-top model, so that won't be a problem. I actually went to Lowe's and checked out the model I was looking at, and I was able to lift it easily, so it won't be hard at all to move around. I'll probably order it in the next day or so.

Thanks for the idea though.

I am watching for a couple of larger drill presses. One for the wood shop and one for the blacksmith shop. They are out there! (cue X Files theme)
