I live in Bellingham, Washington in the winter months. This is the headquarters location for Grizzly with a huge showroom floor. We're talking major candy store here.

Grizzly has bought the South Bend name brand. Their own named lathes are made in China while the South Bend lathes are made in Taiwan. The South Bends appear to be made with a lot more care and attention to detail. I purchased a 8x18 South Bend from them last year. The last I checked they had them on a close out price of $1,965 plus $99 for freight. http://www.grizzly.com/products/8K-8-x-18-Lathe/SB1001

I am a noobee to pipe making so take my opinion as less than expert. I love this machine. It is dial controlled variable speed, reversible with digital rpm readout, super accurate and a joy to use.

I live on the other side of the mountains near Spokane :). Good choice for your winter harbor :)
