Harbor Freight sells a decent dust collector for 199 and you can always use a 20% off coupon. I replaced the bag with a super high efficiency filter based on other comments here and it works great. It's powerful and near clean room filtration for about a 350.00 investment.

How loud is it?

Like a med size shop vac. It's not "quiet". It certainly is not louder than other typical dust collectors. I'm going to wall mine off eventually. For me as a very new maker I'm thrilled with this. Will it last as long as a >$600.00 one? Probably not but who knows. It has good reviews and I decided not to spend a lot on equipment until I get more experienced.

Filters: http://wynnenv.com/products-page/woodwo ... r-pricing/ I called the guy and was very helpful and actually told me I didn't need the most expensive one and answered all my installation questions. The filtration you get out of this setup is a magnitude better than a lot more expensive systems. The 35A series fits perfectly on the HF collector. The 0.5 micron nano (Merv 15) will filter smoke. and is good if you work with toxic woods. The 80/20 blend (Merv 10) is more than adequate for normal woodworking and briar ... and quite cheaper. Depends what you use it for. Both last for years according to the sales guy. You must use a plastic type bag on the bottom or it defeats the purpose of the cartridge filter. I'm not trying to sell these filters but they do also provide better airflow too vs. the bag types because there's actually a lot more surface area for the air to go through.

Then of course you have to buy adapters, hose, etc. and he has some premo hose too at competitive prices. So, it adds up.

If I used it at lot every day like some guys here, I might be more worried about the quality.

Sounds like a throaty Euro race car muffled down.Total 200 I had duck tape and easy to make a separator.Whats good is it works well and you can get a long xtend warranty.Bag is huge. On quality. Walk in wave warranty, say it broke they give you another.

Compelling. I use a tiny 6 gal shop vac right now. It does the job....ish but my shop is in my Chicago apartment and anything louder than a small shop vac won't please the neighbors too much.

I wear a light shop apron definately saves your clothes, adds pockets, keeps most of the dust off. if you're not getting covered in saw dust you're not making enough saw dust.

At my carving area I have a brass brush screwed to the table top, when the files become clogged, a couple of swipes across the brush easily cleans the teeth of the file.

I got the file brushes by the bench, but the jeans are just a file and sandpaper magnet. I think the apron will work and make me look official. Ha!

So I bought a pretty thick leather welding one on Amazon and it wasn't comfortable. I stopped by Harbor Freight and bought their leather welding one for around $8 after using a 20 percent off coupon. It's great. Thinner . This is one case where cheaper is better.
