drilling process

Post by SmokeyBert »

After reading some posts on the forum about how to drill pipes and create proper airflow without nasty artifacts like turbulence or trapping moisture; I am curious about fancier/exotic stems like this one by Viggo Nielson:
Image

Do you think this was still done with just two drilled passages and the tolerances are just that close to make the airway connect without arcane finagling?

As far as I can see, to join this bowl and stem will require a 3rd passage as I'm thinking of it in my head. One passage drilled through the bowl, one drilled in to the shank and a third to branch between the two.

I am curious about the amount of work involved and how you could do something like this and still retain all of the qualities of a superior pipe design. Unless the angles are really there to drill straight through and it's just hard to eyeball it without having the pipe in hand?

Nope.

There is a wealth of knowledge here. Just do a search and you find the answer regarding proper drilling.

I've read a bit on here about proper drilling which is why I found this pipe design fascinating from a master.

It didn't appear to me that standard pipe drilling would fit the length and angles available with this shank style.

I wish I could get the pipe in my hands to look at it; maybe the bowl or the airhole is off center enough for the two airways to line up without fancy drilling magic.

It will. Hell, you can take a straight edge and lay it on the image and see that there's plenty of room for a straight drill in the shank.

Hope this helps.

There are numerous diagrams that have been posted to the site that will probably explain this better than I, but that pipe has standard drilling but the draft hole does not follow down the middle of the shank. If you can picture a straight line extending from where the bottom of the mortise would be to where the bottom of the bowl should be you will see that you can drill a single straight airway there. The airway will not be in line with the mortise, the same way most bent pipes are drilled (and many straight pipes as well). The shape of the shank is made to follow the grain and that is what is throwing you off to think.

Here's a picture Sas posted on another forum that demonstrates. Hope he doesn't mind.

Yeah, pretty standard drilling for a bent pipe is all that is required. I should know; I made a pipe very similar to the Nielsen you posted for my father-in-law to replace one he lost many years ago.

I have several Viggo Nielsen pipes, all smoke well. You are over thinking the drilling. Due as suggested and lay a straight edge over the pipe.

You could use standard drilling with just a little ramp like so

Image

Or you could really make it complicated and drill it like this

Image

I'd guess the second method is what we're all suggesting.

Huber,
WTF?!?!?!
What's with the first drawing? That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Talk about something that's convoluted and unnecessary!

Your website is where I first found the pipe Mr Ocelot =) I found the Nielson Clone on your site and had to go find Nielson's work via google to see what all the fuss was about.

Thank you for that over lay and for all the input - everyone! I really didn't see it before the diagram overlay, feeling pretty slow at the moment.

All I know is, what I thought "standard drilling" meant is clearly not what Huber-san thinks it means.

So here's the advice that was apparently buried in my illustrated post:

This image shows the most likely way that pipe was drilled.

THERE! Are you happy now?!

Does the drill bit HAVE to be yellow because I sometimes use black ones.

It's green and no. Black ones don't work that way when used properly.
