Real name: Walt Cannoy

Age: The big Four-Oh

Location: Lakeland, Florida

Years a pipe smoker: 18

How you got into pipe making: As with many other makers, soon after I started smoking pipes, I figured out that I couldn't afford the pipes that I really wanted, which at the time was freehands and wild shapes like those of Wiley, Souers, Micoli, Preben Holm, Nording, and Edward's freehands... Those were the pipes I was exposed to in my day, before widespread use of the internet, and those were the pipes that I thought were uber-cool, so that was the style that I first emulated. My local pipe shop sold pre-drilled plateau blocks with fancy stems stuck in them, and out of those, my first few dozen pipes were born...

Other interesting facts: I was nearly killed by a dumpster at the age of seven. I sill have a stuffed animal that I got when I was four. I have a one eyed dog. My uncle is one of the original "Rocket Boys" of Coalwood, WV. I am a proficient roller skater, preferring quads. I do oil paintings, build plastic models airplanes, and build balsa flying model airplanes in my spare time. I always try on a 36 first, knowing that I'll need a 38. I'll often try to make one before I will buy one. I prefer push mowers over riding mowers. I am a proficient trumpet player and have played in front of packed houses at the House of Blues and Hard Rock Live. I once published an art magazine. I own, and wear, a pair of bunny slippers. Despite rumors to the contrary, I've never tried any drugs except for pot, which made me nauseous. I'm not a pilot, but I once flew a small plane... I've also mowed a runway. I once spent two hours in jail. I have no children, I have three brothers and one sister, and I only ever knew one grandparent. I smoked cigarettes for a decade, but quit last year. I used to spend eight hours a day shooting nine-ball, the four-leaf clover tattooed on my bridge hand is for luck, and I've got a lethally accurate masse shot. I love the work of Mozart and Flogging Molly equally. My favorite ride is Space Mountain, but it was closed for repairs last time I went. I don't know, and don't care, about most sports, but I'm absolutely mesmerized by curling. I do not have a reddit account.

Are you serious about your Uncle? I love October Sky. I show it to my engineering kids every year.

Yup. Billy Rose is my mother's brother.

He was not portrayed in the movie, although his name was mentioned, but he is interviewed on the DVD extras. Last I heard, he was still working for the coal mines as an engineer, and he has earned his company a few patents!

Man, I haven't played in almost ten years now... but I might still have some chops left.
