Full-bent on lathe...

On a full bent pipe like this how do I shape the shank? On the lathe would I just need to set the tool rest in front of the stummel and work from that angle rather than from the side in order to turn the shank?

I like your design. I would make the shank a bit longer though. You have plenty of room to add on the top of the shank for the airway.

Yes, all of the work on this pipe (and once you figure this out, on just about every pipe!) is done "head on" rather than spindle style on the lathe.

I agree with Wayne too - make that shank a little longer, it will ease your angles up some.

Solution: You don't shape that shank on the lathe. ;)

This is advice that I can follow, since I don't do any stummel work with a lathe.

I do it both ways, with and without the lathe. Longer shank, yes! Then like the Sas says, straight in with the cut!!!

So, I'm a little lost. You can't actually do that shank on the lathe -- I wasn't (just) being a smart aleck -- the shank is curved and not straight. You could do maybe 1/8" or so to have a guide for making the shank circular, but you can use a compasss and draw the guide on the end for that.

What's all this lathe talk? What am I missing?

The first small bit of the shank is all I was talking about. I know the curve can't be done. I'm just not super skilled on the lathe and have only done a very small amount of stuff from head-on.
