I Started Another Billiard And This Is Where I Am At

Post by shikano53 »

I started this one after discarding the one I posted a few days ago.
Jeremiah, I took your advice and cut back the edge on the 6" wheels I have to try and create a 'V' around the edges. Third picture.
Please see past the state of the shaping, I know it's rough but I wanted to hopefully gain some comments about the chin on this one before I proceed. I also changed my belt sander grit out to 120 as suggested. I'm trying hard to copy/emulate this Sasieni
Thanks folks.

I think that's looking a lot closer than the previous effort. Lot of meat left but I think you've still got the potential of a good pipe in there.

You cut back the disc on the wrong side.

Yeah, the disc is supposed to have a relief on the back of the disc. That way you can get into the corners easier.

At some point, demonstration beats mere words. Walt made this video a few years ago, but it's still worth your time.

That video is 40 minutes well spent (and re-spent a couple times if I'm being honest).
What a great time to be alive.

The chin looks better. I would suggest less taper on the shank.
You can cut the transition with a chain saw file.
The rear bottom of the bowl should have the same shape as the front. The bottom 25% of the bowl basically should be part of a sphere with the shank melded in with a small radius. The join should be a symmetrical tear drop with the point at the “South Pole”.

I would also suggest that you leave the taper on the upper portion of the bowl for last, or at least make it more subtle. As it is, it appears to be headed toward an egg or a brandy.

Thanks guys, I was working away on all the advice and got a little greedy on the belt sander. When I say greedy what I mean is, "I thought I could save myself a little bit more time by taking a little bit more off", and in much less time than it takes to tell, I went too far and that was that.

Power tools are very seductive, and when you have developed the techniques to use them, they save time.
However, as you have noted, you can’t put material back once it’s ground or sawn off.
I now (after multiple similar episodes to the above) use a nice 0 cut Swiss half round file for most of my final (post French wheel) shaping. I have found that a solid hold on the stummel and a two handed filing technique are the way to go for me.
I examine the stummel and mark the high spots with a pencil, mount the stummel and file off the pencil marks. (I can PM you my set up for mounting the stummel)
Patience is also key. Take a deep breath, smoke your pipe, and consider your next steps.
