My Carving Lessons thus far

Post by Bluesytone »

I thought I would note some carving lessons that I'm learning the hard way thus far in the journey and would appreciate any tips from the pros here.

1. Better to wreck a block of ebauchon then a more expensive block of plateaux
2. Measure 1143 times and drill once
3. Round off sharp corners to aid in turning without chipping
4. Sharp tools save blocks
5. Always take off a little less rather than a little more = less regret from getting greedy with the sander or turning tools
6. I'm gonna need more blocks
7. Don't force the stem and crack the shank... file it some more ( note: see number 5 before filing )
8. Don't drill the airway too far and across the chamber (note: see number 2 before drilling )
9. Drill the airway and chamber first. If there are any defects inside the chamber such as pitting, you will have wasted all that carving time.
10. I'm gonna need just one more tool, and maybe another after that

When things start to feel easy, do something you don't think you can.

Tonights lesson : Repeated lesson 5. " Always take off a little less rather than a little more = less regret from getting greedy with the sander or turning tools"

... this one take plenty of practice. Nailed a good draft hole and chamber and then while turning the bowl I managed to end up just practicing trimming way too much wood. :banghead:
