OK, first I remove the bark with a medium wire wheel using only light passes on the outer edge of the wheel.

I move to a smaller "Fine" grade wire wheel... sometimes I will go in with a handheld wire wheel if there are a great deal of deep "veins".

It's funny that you bring up "Spiney" plateaux, because one of my current pipes which is just done of the rough stage, has the sharpest, smallest needle-like plateaux I've ever seen in rough form...

I'm actually leaving it while I finish the pipe... I'll decide what to do when I get to the staining stage...

I'll try to post a picture tomorrow (I should have it done tomorrow, unless I screw it up majorly)

I usually just hit it with a course wire wheel and then sand it if I think I need to take the edge off of it a little.
