mortise/tenon question...

Post by bscofield »

I think something similar to this was asked but not the exact question. What is the smallest you want a mortise/tenon? Conversly, what is the smallest wall thickness that the mortise should have?

I am not aware of any rules of thumb on this. I use a 5/16" tenon and the shank is either 3/4 to 7/8".

Smallest tenon I have done is 1/4". Smallest mortise wall thickness I've done is about 1/8" for a pencil shank. If you do the math on those two dimensions the resultant shank is 1/2" diameter.
