drilling a horn

Post by andrew »

Before I go screw up a perfectly innocent piece of wood, how do you drill a horn? Specifically, where does the airway intersect the chamber? I've seen a lot of ideas in past threads, but no consensus (im not expecting hand holding and skipping down the lane). This thing is almost 180 degrees different from an oom, so the airway mechanics are gonna be really different. I thought about drilling it right down the middle of the chamber (centered), and I thought about how to remove the dead space around the edges of the airway, but you'd never be able to fully smoke the pipe. Would it be better to drill it flush with the bottom of the chamber?

This is actually a happy coincidence for me that you brought this up Andrew. I was actually just starting to draw up my first attempt at a horn and was considering some of the same questions.
Thank you for the example David.

The odd thing is that the piece of briar I drew on is unsuitable for the shape.

The top curve follows the boundary between heartwood and outer and will be full of little pits, you can see some of them on the surface.
