Thanks for posting Chris. One of the best videos I've seen on making a pipe with the metal lathe. That's one hell of a long shank too.

What type of extra long drill bit did you use for the airway?

Just an extra long 4mm bit. I prefer a split point, parabolic flute. They self centre better so are less likely to wander and clear chips very well also. Expensive yes but worth every penny and a good quality one that is well cared for lasts a long time, I think the one used in that video has been in use for well over a year now and still going strong.

I think this video and the one Kurt did on the wood lathe should be "stickied" so newbs like me can reference them with ease.

Excellent video Chris. Nice work! Now, we are all waiting for the finishing video.
The way to make people want to smoke your pipes is to develop a reputation for excellence in your work. This takes a lot of hard work and several years to accomplish, and there are no short cuts. You just have to keep at it. - Rad Davis

Great video. I'm a newbie at pipe making.
I don't have a metal lathe but i am using my old craftmans wood lathe to make my pipes.
I saw several steps in there that i have been skipping or hadn't thought of that will really help me out..

Thanks again!

This is a very helpful video! Thank you for sharing this.

Did you make the chuck system?

I made a set to work on a PSI Barracuda 2 jaw, but I think I might attempt to make a system like the one you're using in this video. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Rob

That chuck was made to my design by a local machine shop many years ago now. I currently use a jaw system made by Trent Rudat for most of my turning. Self centreing is much more efficient when you are making lots of pipes, independent like you see in the video is very useful and much more versatile but slower in the long run hence my upgrade. Of course I have the best of both worlds with my shop full of chucks! lol

Chris, what's the bit you're using to face the mortise? Obviously not a standard forstner bit.

It's a precision counterbore, I like it because it's fast but you could just as easily use your lathe tool.
