Hey guys. I have a commission for a pipe made from a specific block. The block is on the small side, and has some odd grain orientation. I was wondering if anyone sees a shape that will work well with this block. The only requirements are: long shank and short stem. I can only see a cutty/belge shape in the block. I could do a billiard, but I have done a lot of those lately. a pot is also an option, but i dont really care for the pot style. anyone have any other ideas?

Looks like the Dublin shape would work well, but I'd probably make a lovat.

Keep the plateau on the bowl and shank and, as Mr. Sandahl suggests, make a Dublin.........slightly bent Dublin.

I'm also with Bruce, you have nice flat even plateau there, make use of it and make a nice sweeping curved Dublin/horn.

I agree with the bent Dublin idea. What about something along these lines:

On second thought, it might be shank heavy and not sit. You could alter the shape so it's not a sitter or there's plenty of room to do a straight long shanked Dublin.

Thanks guys! I eliminated the Dublin because it would can't in the opposite direction of the grain. I like the bent sitter idea Wayne. I don't think it would sit Unaided though. I may swipe your design and go with a round bottom Dublin. You're pretty handy with that red pen Wayne.

Yeah I think something in the bent dublin category is your best bet. You have to find a way of balancing the tendency of a backward cant, and I think the right curve would do just that. Good luck kid!

Update:
I ran into a pit on the bottom of the bowl and drilled the mortise off angle. PS I was drinking beer the year that you were born kid! Lol
