Fake blast tomato attempt

This pipe was almost finished, but it got itself broken. I played around with some wire brushes and think I got something similar to a light blast. As all ways, feel free to leave critiques and/or comments. Even though the pipe broke before I could finish I think it was well enough along to critique (plus, like everyone here, I want to get better)

Yep, I used the wire brush that is bowl shape for most of the surface, and the small kind that looks like a paint brush (bristles all together) for the tight areas.

Thanks you! I was disappointed when the mortise just suddenly cracked. I sawed the shank down and added an extention. Have to make a new stem, and even though the wood has some flaws I don't think I will try the rusticating again.

Hopefully soon I can post a 100% usable finished pipe soon.

Yeah, the finish isn't very good on it's own. However, I think if you did a craggy rustication then gave it the wire-brush treatment, that could add some excellent depth to the texture!

I agree, thank you. In the very least, a craggy rustication would help even out the rustication as a whole.

To other members on the forum who suddenly find themselves wanting to "try" something new while finish a pipe up, it is good to do it on a scrap piece of briar first, or on one of the reject pipes that are slowly filling up a tucked away box. I often neglect to do this thinking that it will waste time. Then I ruin the pipe in some way, and spend even more time fixing that mistake.

So I took this tomato and turned it into a learning experience. I added a shank extention (not sure about what kind of wood it is, but the Chinese name is "jinsi nan"). I also played around with decorating the stem a bit too with some horn. Oh yeah, I also did some practice withh adding a cap on the end of the extension. Have a look and leave a comment or advice. I also took the stem off the original tomato, and put it on a pipe I did a while ago. I made some changes to that pipe as well, so if you have any comments or critiques on it, I would more than happy to hear them!

Thanks for the compliment I wish I had better attention to detail! That tomato got a little stain on the top part of the shank extention, and there are probably many other areas (rim on the bowl) I could have done better. My wife wanted me to sell it, but I don't really trust the extention's durability. So it is now mine

The rusticated billiard I ended up breaking like a damn fool. I was out with a small pipe community here in Chongqing and was getting too excited talking with fellow pipe enthusiasts, for some reason I forgot that I wasn't in the shop and pulled the stem out while the pipe was hot and cracked the shank At least it is me breaking my own pipes and not other people.
