Shaping this type stummel

Post by JDwood »

How is this type stummel shape accomplished, especially the front portion? Are there special tools used?

This can be done by just about anything. Probably the quickest is to use a sanding disc. You can also use carving knives or chisels or files and rasps. A dremel with various bits would work as well. If I want to shape something unique, I will go to a local woodworking store and look at the different tools and bits and think about which ones will work for my particular needs. For some specialized work, pipe makers will create or modify their own tooling.

Fastest is by disk. Gouges can be used too.

There was a thread on here a while back about shaping a blowfish. An elephant's foot/shield is basically just a blowfish with the shank turned 90 degrees.

Woodchuck or Woodpecker are the best options.

Or you could use Files, dremel, sanding disk, belt sander, sandpaper, gouge, etc...

It is just sculpting by hand no matter what tool you use.

I guess a multi axis cnc mill would work too if you got a couple hundred thousand to blow.

Okay, were you joking about the woodchuck and woodpecker or did you mean the Woodchuck Power Taper Tool?

A beaver would work in a pinch...when the woodchuck can't chuck wood.

For a complicated shape like this, I usually give viagra to rats and tie sandpaper to their peckers. A little rat pheromone on the parts you want sanded and you can sit back with a nice cigar, they do all the work.

J.D.,

Just in case.. We are joking about the woodpecker and woodchuck.

To make any shape, you can use any handtools, disc sander, belt sander, or hand held rotary tool. It is your hands that make the shape. Not the tool. The tool only assists you.

Whew! That's great, because I left my woodchuck out in the shop this weekend and it got too hot...
