Are these two materials basically the same thing? If not, can anyone give a pro/con comparison of the two?

They're basically different names for the same thing. Ebonite is sometimes though of as a higher quality material though. A lot depends on the curing process and how much sulphur is added to harden the rubber. Usually a higher sulphur content means that the material will oxidise faster.
