Ring mandrel

Post by kasperbunk »

Would this work for turning accent rings for pipes? http://m.bangleguy.com/catalog/item/8603327/9727779.htm

I know some of you guys use pin gauges, but a set of pin gauges is extremely expensive here in europe.

Pros an cons in using a ring mandrel?

I would say a set of pin gages is expensive here in the US, too. But worth it. This is intriguing, but I don’t know if it allows for small enough bands for what you’d put on a pipe. You can always turn your own out of brass for the sizes you need. Pin gages allow you to work on the end of the piece, not just the outside.

Search expanding arbors on eBay. will get you a little gadget like this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-4-Expanding- ... rk:22:pf:0

If small enough a drill chuck in the lathe headstock will get you in business.

Make your own pin gauge to suit the job at hand, it's what I do as I can't afford a set either.

i have considered that. It certainly add some time to the task but depending on the tasks, may be time/cost effective.

Yes it adds some time but over the years you build up a nice little collection of bits. If you stick to standardised sizes it makes things easier too. 99% of my tenons are 6mm, so I only need a few pins around that size, and almost all my shank caps etc are drilled to 8,9 or 10mm, in fact mostly 10mm. Sticking to a few simple standards is not difficult and makes things easier in the long run.

Made the mandrel myself. It works great. Just saved a 100$ worth of pin gauges:-)ImageImage
