First Pipe, Looking for Critiques

Post by Masonrygh »

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to thank you all in advance. While I'm extremely proud to have completed my first pipe, I'm the first to admit that there is plenty of room for improvement.

You'll notice an obvious gouge on top of where the stem meets the shank; I was experimenting with tools and cut away too much. I'm sure that the makers on this forum will instantly see a hundred other mistakes completely hidden to my beginner's eye.

Please be ruthless with your critiques friends, I'm looking to better myself and my abilities :D

Thank you so much again :)

First, good job on making a billiard for critique. That’s really the best place to learn.

Second, work on keeping the shank round from the shank face all the way to the bowl/shank transition. Yours gets wider on the sides towards the shank. If you put a slight taper on the shank, still keep it round.

Third, work on the stem/shank transition. Rotate the stem 180° and make sure it fits flush in any orientation and you can’t feel the stem protruding above the shank.

Focus on that for the next one. Better to make sure you get two things absolutely right on the next one than 100 things halfway right.

Thanks sandahlpipe for the feedback!

I'll make those corrections one my next one; I'm so excited to get the next shipment in!

By the way, "Better to make sure you get two things absolutely right on the next one than 100 things halfway right" is incredible advice in general, so thank you for that :)

Janka, sorry that you're not seeing the images, does anyone know if I should post them in a different format or file type?

I read a couple of stickied posts detailing posting etiquette and photo angles, but didn't see anything expressly stating photo posting procedure.

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right place.

Don't try to create a pipe "from nothing" shape-wise. You'll run into a swamp of technical vs. shaping issues that overlap and are impossible to critique in a useful manner.

Much better to separate the two.

How? For your next attempt try to exactly copy an existing pipe.

That way you will know what you got to match and what you didn't without having to ask anyone, and the resulting questions that arise FROM the differences you see (but couldn't make right) will be explicitly answerable by the pipe makers here because most will boil down to tools and techniques.
