New Rusticating Technique (For Me)

Post by RadDavis »

Hi Guys,

I just finished a pipe with a new rusticating technique that I'm trying. Please let me know what you think:

Great!

As I said when introducing my own results of a (maybe) new way of rustication, I like those that don't give ’em that carved look very much. BTW: Maybe you might give us some sort of a hint how to do that?

Is it building up that grain-like structure artificially, or does that rusticating follow the original lines in some way? I really love it beeing close to some sandblasted look.
It all compliments that pipe. Not a shape I would prefer, but I like it’s appearance. The tonal range of the stain and rustication structure even fits the stem colors.

Hi Alexander,

I did it with the smallest dremel engraving bit and a very light hand.

On this shape, I just wanted the rustication to radiate out from the center, so I didn't follow the grain lines at all.

I tried it on another pipe that I sold in Richmond and don't have any pics of, but on that one I did follow the grain, and it came out quite nice. A couple of folks thought it was a sandblast.

Thanks for your comments,

Rad

Rad,
I find it very reminiscent of the old GBD Rock root, but a sleeker, more refined texture, I like it, I like it, I like it !!!
I also like the shape. Stellar job on the shading my friend. You posting it on your site?

:thumb: Very nice Rad. I can't add anymore than what has already been said. It has a nice "Autumn" essence to it and I think the stem material was a perfect choice too.

Rad,

I really like this way of rustication. I intented such a rustication but more deeply on some estates I had and I really prefer your results, much more natural :)
Actually I like also the virgin rustication you made on the FH0526 but that's out of the subject.
So : :thumb:

Happy smoking,

Awesome Rad! That is beautiful...the new technique strikes a winning note with me. Great job on the new technique and the pipe overall!

Is there a number for the Dremel bit you used?

And is there some figure for the "lightness of hand"?

Thanks, Stephen!!

As far as the Dremel bit, it's one of the ones that came with it. I have no idea about the number. It's the tiniest engraving bit they make, I think.

As far as "lightness of hand", you'll figure it out. It ain't rocket surgery. :D

Love, Thanks for your compliment!! I visit your site often, and I love your work!

I got to see one of these in person at Richmond. Really cool finishing technique, and the pictures do not do it justice.

A very interesting rusticaton Rad.
Not only do I like the style, I also like the stain you put on that pipe because it makes the rustication even nicer. :thumb:

I've been really busy finishing up some pipe for a local pipe shop over here in Hawaii. But I still log on here and read the threads.
