Okay to flat bottom a billiards.

Post by n80 »

I have an old Medico billiards that has a very slightly flat bottom to it that extends from the bottom of the bowl down the shank. The flat area is narrower than the shank. It is barely noticeable but I find this to be a handy feature as you can sit the pipe down and it will stay upright.

My question is, is this ever done on higher end billiards or only on low end junk like Medicos? For instance if I one day made a really nice billiards would it ruin it aesthetically to add this little flat spot?

Dunhill did it early on, adding a stamped "T" to the nomenclature so that people wouldn't think the flat area was an error.

The key is to not overdo it, and be ready to have any shank line problems highlighted.

Which, a this point, could be a real problem for me.
