Staining

Post by kasperbunk »

From preventing black and yellow to turn green. I have dyed the pipe black from water based fiebings leather dye. I will sand it back and give it a chocolate color alcohol based fiebings leather dye. Top stain will be a yellow alcohol fiebings leather dye. Do I got it wrong?
Should the black be oil based?

I always use alcohol based fiebings leather dye. As the alcohol quickly evaporates, I've had very little issue with colours mixing...

The reason to switch solvents is so that one doesn't smear the other below it. Doing water, then alcohol, then alcohol doesn't achieve this.
Alcohol, then water, then alcohol would, in theory, give you a better result.

But where's Premel with a TIAFO when we need one??

But when doing black as water and yellow as alcohol would stop making it green or?

Part of the "green" issue is that Feibing's Black is a blue-based black, not a true black. So if it runs at all, it mixes as blue (yielding green with yellow for example). I never use black as a base for contrast for this reason - cordovan is red based, and it's close enough for contrast purposes to black for me anyway.
