Doug Finlay invented a new shape

Post by LatakiaLover »

Thought you PMF'ers might enjoy a look at it.

The shank is boxwood.

He calls it the Atlatl

That is art. Simple, beautiful and artistically executed.

My brain refuses to process this, but it's fantastic!

Its quite a beautiful shape, best appreciated while it is upside down, I think.
It reminds me of a scorpion in that position.
I do feel compelled to ask-does it pass a pipe cleaner into the chamber?

Doc, it does not pass all the way into the bowl. It does pass all the way to just under it, but won't make that last turn upward. I'm working on a remedy for future iterations though.

It's been a while since I've checked in. I really like this pipe! Very cool shape and very nicely executed. I'm assuming the airway enters the bowl in the bottom center similar to a Falcon pipe? If so, I don't really see why a pipe cleaner would even have to pass all the rest of the way.

I sometimes get a piece of soggy tobacco plugging the entrance from chamber to airway. A pipe cleaner will push it out of the way or if rotated, snag it out. I don’t think that will work with. 90 degree turn up to the chamber.

I wonder what would happen if the airway angles in at the bottom back of the bowl opposite where the airway traditionally enters the chamber. As long as you de-bur any thin briar around the airway in the chamber, I would think the dynamics wouldn't be too terrible affected. Would be interesting to see.

With the stem off, you can twist a pipe cleaner into the chamber. The extra drag and curvature of the stem and shank make it nearly impossible to twist the cleaner after inserting. The second one in this series will pass a churchwarden cleaner (thin) with a twist at the last turn.
