Minimum thickness

Post by LexKY_Pipe »

I can't find it now, but I read at one time a recommendation for minimum wall thickness for the bowl of being 1/8 inch. Does anyone recall is this is about right?

Hi Craig,

I think it depends where on the bowl you are talking about.

I like to keep it at least 1/4 on the bottom and close to the bottom. The higher up the bowl, the thinner the walls can be. 1/8 would be about minimum for me. Thinner than that around the rim, and it tends to scortch or burn too easily when being lit.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your input. I have a design that I'm working on and wanted to make sure I wasn't infringing on those minimums.

Have a Happy New Year.

I like my bowls a bit thicker - I figure on 1/4" being a minimum - though I have made pipes with thinner walls on request.

I'll chime in with the others 1/4 is the thinnest I'd go. Otherwise it gets added to my own collection.

I've looked at this Eltang while at Uptown's--from the picture it's hard to tell but the walls are a smidge thinner than 1/4".

I generally do not concern myself too much with wall thickness at the top 1/4 of the bowl since the the firehead is not lingering there very long. However, I do like to leave a bit more wood at the bottom of the bowl and thicker walls along the bottom half. That is becuase I tend to smoke my pipe dry to the bottom myself and do not like to have them get too hot.
