I'm a nerd. I know Pat Metheny, Johnny Cash, Flaming Lips, Led Zeppelin, Our Lady Peace (though only in name), and that's it.

Ever heard of Peatbog Faeries, Seven Nations, Enter the Haggis, or Ashley MacIsaac? Those are a few of the bands in my regular listening rotation. There's also America, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Rob/White Zombie, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Soul Coughing, Aphex Twin, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Hmmm. Time to fire up iTunes....

Err.. Well, I know Led Zep and Johnny Cash, of course, but that's it. My outlook is that I never even bother with a band until they've got at least ten albums out, and that virtually rules out all the "Two hit albums and then break-up" bands of the last twenty years. My BOC and Buffet CD collections alone take up a third of my storage box! It's funny looking through my collection, though, because almost everything can be traced back to the 60's or 70's (People think of the Pogues as an 80's band, but their roots are 70's, and then newer groups like the Tossers are really Pogues-Lite, and we're back to the 70's again). I think the only post-1980 music I have that I really listen to are Uman, Blackmore's Night, Apocalyptica, and Joe Hisaishi's movie soundtracks. I got really turned off to popular music back when Nirvana and all that grating, whining alternative music came into fashion, and just never came back (Sorry, Nirvana fans - I'm sure you're out there and sure you're offended, but to me that stuff is like fingernails on chalkboard...)

I'm sure you've heard of some of them?!

:)
Ben Harper is one of the most underrated musicians around IMO.

Interesting OT thread!

I find myself more and more listening to 50s and 60s Jazz. Not too smooth, No mercy for that elevator muzak kind of "white-guy-stealing-black-music" combo doodeling, but before they broke up into that real hard stuff and even later on into free Jazz.
To put it mildly self-critical: It kind of pleases your ear, and you still don't feel like someone is insulting your intelligence acoustically or even by the lyrics, since it's mostly instrumental.
At least the pleasing of the ear would be the same for what we call "Schlager" here in Germany. You know that schmalzy thing… So I think it must have something to do with getting older. (Sigh!)
I just don't find too much within that angry sort of stuff. So I do understand that Nirvana irritation Trever mentioned. Sure life is no 24/7/365 fun thing, but It worries me to see all that (auto-)agression in contemporary music. On the other hand – it's the youngster's right to be angry. Watching my daughter grow, I would rather see her angry than saying "yes" too easy…

wow.. didn't think this thread would grow the legs it did.. glad to see so many people respond. This weekend I made a change and had to listen to the NFL channel... I'm a glutton for anything football and, this being the first weekend with none to speak of for a long, long time, it was a necessity that I feed my "football jones" as much as possible.
