4" & 6" Buffing wheel for hand drill

Post by PapaDuke »

Who ever gave me the advice to switch from the 4" to the 6" wheel because the smaller wasn't picking up the wax...

Was 100% on the money!
Thanks!! Works like a charm.
I've never been one for physics but I could have swore that the smaller whell would rotate faster?? It does not.

Thanks again.
Life is so much better now!
Ok waxing is so much better now? 8)

You're welcome! :thumb: Posted on your pipe #3

To be totally technical, the 4 and 6 inch buff both run at the same speed. If your drill runs at 1500 rpm, then the buff will run at 1500 rpm as well. Just the distance the outside edge of the buff has to travel to spin at that speed is greater. So we're actually looking at feet per minute or inches per minute of the outside surface of the buff rather than revolutions, which will always stay the same. 8O

AKA: Surface Feet Per Minute, or SFPM. Some simple calcs and you can figure that out:

Since a circle's circumference is pi times the diameter:
C=π6 (for a 6" wheel)
or
C=18.85 inches (roughly)

Multiply the circumference (in feet) by RPM, and you get SFPM. For 1500 RPM:
18.85/12 = 1.57 feet
1.57 * 1500 = 2356 SFPM

IIRC, 2400 SFPM is about right for carnuba. Ain't math great!!!
