Tobacco Chambers

Post by ckr »

Hi all,

I have just picked up a set of Silver & Deming bits.

Do you guys modify these and if yes could you please explain how.

Chuck em up, turn it on and shape them with an oil stone or take them right to the grinder?

Do you leave the tip and just round off the outside of the beveled tip?

Having dorked a few spade bits I thought I would ask before grinding.

I send 'em to Ken Lamb, but that's pricey.

A machinist friend of mine told me that a fancy piece of equipment is necessary to grind them correctly. He's a perfectionist, so he may not be aware of anything but the "perfect way" to do this. Otherwise, if you do experiment and find a way to DYI this, let us know. I'd sure try it, once or twice (if it doesn't kill me).

I leave the tip as is and round the bevel off on my bench grinder.

I chuck them my my lathe, and break out the angle grinder. Then I take it to the bench grinder and fine tune the cutting edge. It's a hairy process, but I always get exactly the profile I want.

Thanks Guys,

I guess as long as the bit is spinning it should shape evenly. Doctor says get more iron in the diet anyway, I'll give it a go.
