Do you have any idea where I might find the Metal bottoms for tampers?

Often those are turned from brass rod stock on a metal lathe.

I have had plenty of good luck with tampers made only of wood.

I don't think there are any specific suppliers for such an item. You can also use stainless steel rod stock. There's a guy on eBay who periodically sells offcuts ranging from 1/4" to about 1 1/2" diameter. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrp ... FSQ3aMESOI
