Morta

Post by pennsyscot »

I'm sure someone has posted on this topic previously, but the search
does not seem to work for me. I've seen Trever's article on making
pipes from Morta. It looks like an interesting material. My internet
searches have turned up nothing except a wood called Ancient Kuari.
Ancient Kuari is a fossilized wood from Canada. Is this a suitable material
for pipemaking? Does anyone know of a source for Morta? Is "bog oak"
the same thing as Morta? thanks, Scot

Scot, I'm definitely not an expert on morta, but as far as I know, morta is "bog oak". To me it seems as if morta = fossilized oak in the pipemaking world.

I'm sure the experts will give us all the relevant information :)

Aqualong, very nice pipes. Could you suggest any suppliers for these materials which accept international orders? Your website has lots of great pictures but I don't read Italian. thanks, scot

I'm not sure it's possible to buy Morta. If so, it's likely not readily available. Here are a couple of links:

You might check with Trevor Talbert:

I'm not sure he sells it, but he certainly works with it, and lives where most of it is harvested.

Trever and I have spoken briefly on morta, and he's actually looking for a reliable source himself. Suffice to say, he's not selling any of the small bit he currently has. In fact, for now, his morta pipe production is at a standstill. Sad days....
