handMade pipes, Ukraine

Post by xmhr »

Hi guys,
Want to show you my first pipe I've made from scratch for a friend.
It was designed in other way first but it was damaged when buffing. Chunk was cracked. I was so sad 'cause spent a lot of time for it but I decided to try replace it with bamboo. I know this is not a great work but I hope some day to amaze you with some pipe

Sandpits were uncovered suddenly and in very inconvenient places. Front and bottom sides of the bowl. After trying to remove I left them as is:

I don't fancy the wide ring on the stem, it looks too "geometric" compared to the rest of the pipe, but for a first pipe it looks pretty good. Pity about the flaws, but that's part of pipemaking.

EDIT: What might look better is if you flatten the ring top and bottom, so that it's oval shaped and closer to the thickness of the stem at that point.

Well done Mykola. I have to agree with Frank about the ring. Somehow it does not fit in with the rest of the pipe. Otherwise I like it. Nice first pipe and a very lucky friend. Can I be your friend too

Thanks for your comments guys.
About the ring - I was told already about it by ukrainian and russian pipemakers. I just didn't want to crap it and finish asap. Before crack it looked like this:

How deep is that little crack? You have lots of wood there - why not rusticate the front of the pipe and hide that fissure?

I need to try rustication before applying it to a pipe. Little sandpit is deep enough, shape will be transformed if I try remove it (

Hello guys, here is my new "monster"...
It was designed as volcano but all the time something was going wrong. I bought a band saw (yeahhh!!!) but I need a little practice - top part was cut more than I expected in one moment ))
When I was drilling tobacco hole - drill bit had cracked, so I made new hole, but it is not centered. When I was sanding pipe and tried to remove piece of cracked bit I discovered bit too close to new hole so I had cut off the shank. I decided to finish this pipe because bad experience is also experience...
