Greetings Gentlefolk. Just read in _National Parks_ Winter 2010 issue
that one means of helping POWs escape Germany was to send them
Kaywoodie pipes that had secret compartments for currency and maps.
There's a pic of one. I wonder if anyone owns an old Kaywoodie that,
unbeknown to them, has a secret compartment. May your pipes be ever
sweet. Tim in Pacifica.
Pipes with secret compartments?
Pipes with secret compartments?
I just read this on ASP. How cool! I know my next special project!

Since when are POW's allowed to receive care packages? If I'm ever a POW, I hope someone will send me night-vision goggles, a bulletproof vest, and an Uzi to aid my escape.

P.S. That is a very cool little historical anecdote.

You can count on me, Todd. I promise that if ever you become a POW, I will send you a care package just as you have described. Or, if you would prefer, i could bake all of those items into a cake for you instead. Your choice!ToddJohnson wrote:Since when are POW's allowed to receive care packages? It an Isreali pipe made by Galil. A small, specialized company.
Re: Pipes with secret compartments?
If you read any of the story behind the movie The Great Escape, it will tell you how much of the prisoners success was due to materials being sent in care packages from family members. They didn't show that in the movie because they didn't want to tip anyone off to what was possible if we had soldiers in a similar situation at a later date.
The opinions expressed above do not necessarily reflect those of the management or of the little green men who have been following me all day.

It's also quite amazing what people can create when they have nothing to do but sit in a cell and think for extended periods of time.

Re: Pipes with secret compartments?
I would love to see a photo of one of the secret compartment pipes, anyone have a photo?
Re: Pipes with secret compartments?
Me too. I imagine a Euro pipe with filter removed.
Re: Pipes with secret compartments?
I believe they were forwarded by the Red Cross, hence known as Red Cross packages. Probably allowable under the Geneva Convention wossname - like waterboarding (it's not really torture, don't you know).ToddJohnson wrote:Since when are POW's allowed to receive care packages?

Re: Pipes with secret compartments?
We did not allow individual packages of any type from the outside. Red Cross could only deliver letters from family members. Also, personal items for American held POWs and detainees are basically limited religious, hygiene, and a few comfort items. None of these come from outside the facility.
