Help Whip Dog Into Shape

Post by pennsyscot »

This is my 15th. My last pipe was also a bulldog. I think it might be easier to have my errors pointed out before finishing. So, here it is at 320. This longer leaner version may be easier to get right. This is the cleanest block I have encountered in my brief pipemaking experience, a real pleasure. As usual, I welcome all criticisms and suggestions. Thanks, Scot

I agree with the others, time to rusticate or blast that puppy and finish her up.

Why would you mess with such a clean piece? :?:

 I guess you were joking about "hiding" the tiny pit?

Depending on what the tiny pit does through finish sanding, I'd make it a smooth. Especially that birdseye top.

Yep, i agree with everyone else. This looks very nice, and would probably do well as a smooth. Nice work!

Ok...thought that any kind of pit like that would send it to the blaster, but, what do I know! I'm just a hack anyway... ;)

Tiny little pinpricks like that can be easily obscured with stain. No need to rusticate or sandblast.

Thanks everyone for the great input. I'm gonna go ahead and finish as is. I have decided to leave the sand speck as is. The speck is on a round part of the bowl. Although it dosen't apear deep, I don't want to cause it to be out of round. I guess I'll have to apply a dark contrast finish to disguise it. I'll post pics in the gallery upon completion.

P-Scot,

Did you have previous woodworking experience? I hope I am that good by my 15th.

Thanks for the compliment. I have no professional experience. I've been a hobbiest woodworker for about 7 years.
