Lathe "kit" suggestions? Already have a suitable motor

Post by Dixie_piper »

... or at least I think I do. My ol' lady's Grandfather gave me a motor he'd bought for his laundromat and never used. Brand new in the box (no telling how old though)
It's 1/2HP, 120V, 1725/1410RPM and 9.8 Amps with a 1/2" shaft. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in electric motors isn't the amperage pretty much like torque? If I'm wrong, I still would think it capable of powering a lathe.
My question being, I'm searching for a lathe or lathe kit that would come w/o a motor so I can save some money in that aspect. Hoping for suggestions as to an affordable but worthy lathe, any pointers fellers?
Thanks in advance for your time and wisdom :P
Regards,
Adam

Your motor is fine especially with the amps 9.8 fla Full load amps should pwer anything. Look at an old lathe that uses a step pulley so you can use the motor Bob Clark.
