drilling freehand

Post by bregolad »

I've started to look into freehand drilling. tried it a couple o'times, worked pretty well, but I did drill and face the mortise before hand. Has anyone tried this with a drill press? thats all I have at the moment, and I have no capital for a lathe.

Mostly, my question is: how to face and drill the mortise without a lathe. "Freehand." how do you all accomplish this?

I use the Drill Press with a 32mm Forstner bit to face the shank.
Then, this is very important, without moving the block,
you change the Forstner bit to the one you'll drill the mortise.

Another option is to use an adjustable countersink, like this one:

Then you face and drill the mortise in one-shot.

thanks eder!
I saw those counterbores, and I was wanting to get one. I thought they might be a bit dangerous, but just wanted to ask.
