Facing @ 11.43mm/.45" for a fancy stem?
I'm still going through some "practice runs" with my drilling since I'm being forced to do it freehand.
The mortise drilling I've got spot on, the draught hole... gonna try a shorter bit to start it
My facing, is actually satisfying even with my mediocre forstner bits.
Now to the issue at hand; I'm using some of Tim's prefab Ben Wade style stems, and while they are very well made, the stem end beyond the tenon is .45"/11.43mm, how in the hell do you face that?
I've considered a few options, let's see if they're my typical "no dumb ass, that won't work" type brain farts;
1) add a shank cap, face/flush the entire end (make it somewhat larger so it's known that it was intentional)
2) sand ever so lightly until the OD of the stem reaches the 11mm mark and then pray I can find an 11mm forstner bit locally
3) crawl back under my rock and just wait for the end?
This may be a typical problem, and while I know that push type stems aren't intended to be flush with the OD of the shank, it does need facing

Re: Facing @ 11.43mm/.45" for a fancy stem?
Basically, my stems are a "one off" size and I'm debating whether I should attempt to sand the stem down to a size that I can face the block so they will match up, or if I should just add a shank cap for a typical "military" style mount.
In hindsight, it's a dumb question, I'll just add the shank cap. Sorry

I'm having a hard time here too Adam; are you talking about trying to make the shank and the stem the same size and then stick them together? You should face the stem end of the block, drill the mortise and draught hole, then attach the stem to the block and shape the whole thing with the stem attached. Not sure if that's an answer or not, but I tried.

No need to apologize. We'd like to help.
I remain mystified. Maybe a photo?

Me too. I just don't understand what you are trying to accomplish. If you want the stem to go further in, just sand the end of the tenon off. But I don't suspect that's what you are trying to do.

What it sounds like to me is that he wants to face the shank end of the block with a forstner and have that be his final shank diameter; then he wants the diameter of the premade stem to match that....? Am I close Adam?

Re: Facing @ 11.43mm/.45" for a fancy stem?
That's kinda it.
Think Walle, the end of the shank won't be completely faced, BUT, where the stem pushes in will have a flush surface to mate up to, if that makes any sense?
My main question (which I'll just have to play by ear) was what would be the most efficient way to achieve a flat surface on the shank to meet up with the end of the stem, with such an odd diameter. I'll most likely face with the 1/2" forstner then gradually round the outer diameter off to equal the same as the stem.
Next time, I'm making my own damn stems
This would be an easier question to answer if I would've been able to ask it the right way.
No worries though, I'll figure it out

I think I get it.
You have a stem that's .45" in diameter?
Your want to make a counterbore in the shank where the stem should sit recessed into?
If so, use a 1/2" Forstner bit to drill the recess. Don't sweat the .025 gap between the stem side and the side of the counterbore. Chances are you'll need that gap for "wiggle room".

Heh - I make a lot of pipes with recessed stems, so your description kinda sorta made sense to me.

I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because...ah some...people out there in our nation don't have maps and...ah...I believe that eh-education such as in South Africa and the Iraq everywhere like such as and I believe that they should....our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or-or should help south Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future...

That girl is a student at one of my best buddy's alma mater. I give him endless grief about the about the apparent quality of his education.
