I got my needle files on ebay, shipped from China or Japan, they ship to anywhere, and they're like $10 US, if I remember right.

Re: dremel tool to cut the V shape on a mouthpiece
my tools for making V-shape
figure
i just drilling 3 holes with 1.5mm bit on my lathe (black on figure) - center and V shape
and remove ebonite between holes with milling cutter and 1.5mm bit with my proxxon FBS 240/E
form an inner shape with diamond needle and sandpaper on metal pattern (right upper on photo)

on upper photo - my homemade wood "vise"
i clamp the rod, place vise instead of QCTP on my lathe and drill holes turning the vise to the right angle
then i mill mouthpiece bite with dremel milling bits (left on photo)

Another tip for cutting the v slot with a drill bit try using something with a slower rpm than 15000 (witch atually burns away the ebonite) like a cordless drill or your lathe gives a lot more controll. I cut the slit with a corless armed with an 1,8mm bit, it takes a minute and after that i just touch it up with file total time to cut the slit is around 3 min and always perfect results
Re: dremel tool to cut the V shape on a mouthpiece
Thank You for your reply... do You hold the mouthpiece in your hands while cutting the slot or You use some kind of jig....

I have the rod secured in a vise and hold the cordless in my hand with the other hand steadying it

I do the same thing, Love, only with my variable speed Dremel set on the first setting. You get no torque at the lower rpm, but you don't need it.geigerpipes wrote:Another tip for cutting the v slot with a drill bit try using something with a slower rpm than 15000 (witch atually burns away the ebonite) like a cordless drill or your lathe gives a lot more controll. Re: dremel tool to cut the V shape on a mouthpiece
Rad, I like the cordless better a dremel starts at 10000 rpm at the lowest setting my cordless starts at 0-500 rpm at the low setting with plenty of torque but whaterver gets the job done
Re: dremel tool to cut the V shape on a mouthpiece
If you're having trouble getting a clean V slot using a 1/16" bit, try using a 3/64" bit. Since I started using a 3/64" bit on the low setting on my Dremel I've been getting much cleaner and thinner results.
