First Pipe - Olivewood Bent Apple/Strawberry

Post by frazeeg »

I recently finished my first pipe. It's somewhat of a cross between a bent apple and a strawberry.

I was pretty happy with the draft hole lining up with the center of the chamber.

Some things I know I could do better:
  • Stem is skewed to the stummel
Generally some oxidation left on the stem
    Symmetry
Not entirely happy with the shape of the shank or where it connects to the bowl
Also, I finished with paste wax since I don't have any carnauba yet. But I've heard that olive doesn't take on too much of a shine anyway since it's porous.

Comments and criticism are appreciated. I've done plenty of woodworking on furniture and the like but pipemaking is entirely new to me. Every little bit of knowledge I can absorb is great.

Thanks!

I made a pipe (my first) in olivewood and it shines, it was sanded 2500, polished and treated with carnauba
Greetings,

That would help. I only went up to 1000 grit, I believe.

Sure it helps. Going up from 1000 grit is when you can see a good improvement

It's a rubber mouthpiece. I get them from Uhle's in Milwaukee but I suppose you can find them anywhere. I have a habit of chewing the button so this helps me not destroy my pipes.
