Sorry for the repetitiveness, but here's some more tampers. I don't have proper sandpaper or waxes, so the finish is pretty crap:

As you have such nice wood on hand why not set up a pole lathe ? With a basic set of tools you could make all sorts of goodies and introduce something new to the locals.
For sanding try different types of rock, sandstone is the obvious one but others will also serve the purpose.
I seem to remember the guys on Bougainville running trucks on palm oil so how's that for a finish, they also used to make gun parts from bits of old truck etc. so they were pretty creative.
