That is awesome. I wonder if it passes the pipe cleaner test... And here I am trying to figure out how to make my smoke hole hit the chamber at just the right angle, and how to drill my mortise for my tenon. Who needs all that nonsense? I didn't realize I could cut my pipes in half and drill it that way. I was wondering how all you guys were drilling curvy holes.

There actually is some precedent for this.
The Inuit (Eskimo) made stems by splitting a branch, hollowing the core and then wrapping it back up with willow bark or seal skin or something. I recall reading it in Alfred Dunhills Pipe Book.

I know Kurt posted a very nice instructional video of how to drill and shape on a lathe but this just beats everything else. Fast and straight forward with a remarkable result!!

Dear Simeon,
Thank you so much for posting the link to my video. While I confess that my pipe making skills were in their infancy at the time of filming, I still use the *exact* same techniques to make my pipes today. To this day, I consider the glue job on the "really nice one" (see my explanation beginning at about 2:40) to be the pinnacle of my pipe making career. I really did put a LOT more work into that one. It's all in the vise baby.
