First Pipe - Poker

Post by brurobas »

Good evening,

This is the first pipe i ever made. It is not yet finished since i only received my order from PIMO today and it contained the buffing and polishing material.

It was made out of a starting kit which already came drilled and with a stem.

It has some obvious flaws but i am very happy with how it came out overall.

I hope to post some pictures of the finished pipe in the next few days.

Before you finish your pipe you might want to consider taking off some more material at the bowl shank junction. That's probably the number 1 mistake a lot of new pipemakers commit. Look at some of Felix's latest pokers to see what I'm talking about.

Other than that it looks pretty good for a first pipe. Keep up the good work.

The straight bowl is a really cool feature of your pipe. I agree about the bowl/shank section. Tweaking that will get you a really nice cylindrical bowl.

Great first pipe!

Well, it's finished!

I know it has some flaws, as mentioned by some of you guys, but i decided to finish it as it was since i was afraid of screwing everything :D

Bruno, I understand your not wanting to screw things up on your first pipe. :)

If you want to get better, you pretty much have to be willing to screw things up. Otherwise you won't learn anything. :P

Rad is right. You should look at my graveyard of misshapen pipes and poorly drilled blocks. So much money down the drain taught me to slow the hell down and be patient when I work.

Congrats on the first pipe. Now go make another!

I just shaped my first couple of pipes yesterday. Best piece of advice I can give you is to buy a 1"x30" belt sander. They're pretty cheap and I did ALL of my rough shaping with one and an 80 grit belt. They take hours off of the handwork and can give you great results.

Hello and good day. The pipe looks pretty good overal for a first poker. Infact this one looks like the first pipe kit i carved by only using a dremel which took forever.
Keep up the good work and make more pipes. Before you know it you will make even better ones. Regards Pedro.

Chainsaw file works great for shaping the transition between shank and bowl. As Rad says, gotta take the risks to make a good looking pipe.
