Re-Introduction
Hi,
I'm Todd. I've taken about a three year break from forums, but have recently been reading new threads here. I intend to pop in from time to time. I am also working on a line of pipe maker tooling, and I run a school for aspiring pipe-makers here in Nashville when I have time. I look forward to participating in this very helpful forum. The only thing I regret is that both Rad Davis and Bruce Weaver still seem to be here. It sucks, but that's our lot in life.

It's really nice to see you back!
Re: Re-Introduction
BTW, any word on when you might have that tooling line launched?

Todd-
Welcome to the forum. Have you made many pipes? Of all of the shapes, do you prefer classic billiards? Do you prefer Corsican, or Algerian briar? Also, how do you feel about lacquer as a sealant on pipes?

Re: Re-Introduction
Great to have you back, Todd. I blame all of my shoddy techniques and poor craftsmanship on you because of your absence.
Re: Re-Introduction
Glad yer back TJ. Bruce has been a total asshole in your stead, so things have remained very much on course.

Re: Re-Introduction
Welcome back Todd. I hope hacks like me will be able to benefit from your popping in and sharing some of your experience. I'm hopeful that we'll get to see some; "I'm currently working on" or "here's how I..." type of pics/posts from you.
It would be nice to balance the ever present and always needed "fix your shank/stem junction, take more meat off, make that bit thinner" commentary, by adding to the existing but much more limited high end perspectives.
...or more simply put, Welcome back, I hope you post often!
Brian.

Todd Johnson.
I was just reading one of your posts this afternoon. I'm not happy with my off the shelf right hand cutting bit, and was studying on grinding, rake angles, different bits and such.
Your pictures in this post are pretty informative, but I wish there was more detailed info on what use each holds.

Somebody break open the Phillie Blunts and a bottle of Courvoisier.

Oh my God please tell me you're leaving for three years too?
I mean, it's a good day, but you could make it special, Rad.

Re: Re-Introduction
Well, calling anything I'm going to do a "launch" would probably be a misnomer, but I've got a bunch of S & D bits set up for grinding, and a new set of Ken Lamb spoon bits--that don't work--ready for re-profiling. One of the problems I see is that, outside of a few things that are pretty universal--like S & D bits--many of your tooling needs are going to be specific to your current machinery and shop capabilities. That removes any economy of scale for me, so what I'm offering is probably going to be pretty limited unless you guys can all come up with a list of things that you need and can't get. If I can make the numbers work--and by that I mean I'm not losing money--then I'll try to have that stuff made to the specs that I know work. That's pretty much my entire "business plan" as it stands.sam a wrote:BTW, any word on when you might have that tooling line launched?

I am, likewise, offended in solidarity with Rad, but also in hopes that Bruce will make good on his threat to leave the forum.RadDavis wrote:I am offended in solidarity with Bruce.baweaverpipes wrote:Mr. Sasquatch,Sasquatch wrote:Glad yer back TJ.
