Newbie presentation

Post by giannilibrizzi »

Hey guys,

I have been a long time lurker, so I decided to jump in and register, and participate on this wonderful forum. I have been smoking cigars for a good 8 years, a pipe for 5 years. I build furniture, not for a living, as a hobby, but I am an aircraft mechanic. It has been a dream of mine for a while to own my own machines, and start to make pipes myself, although I know it'll take time to make pipes that are decent enough...practice makes perfect, as they say!

I recently bought a mint condition Rockwell Beaver 3400 lathe, for a very decent price. I already have the table for it, chisels, motor, chuck for the tailstock, spoon bit, etc...I am in the process of buying equipment, mainly a chuck, but also a belt sander, and a scroll saw.

I just wanted to say Hi, and introduce myself, before starting to ask questions, and participate on this forum.

Hi Gianni.

Those old Rockwell tools are the best. They last for centuries. I have a table saw that dates to about 1955 I think.

Anyway, welcome aboard - there's nothing for it except to get in there and make a pipe somehow.

Welcome Gianni,

I am looking forward to seeing your future creations.

By the way, I think Nate is an aircraft mechanic too.

That's weird. Nate's been telling me he's an international man of mystery. Sounds to me like he's really CIA.

Welcome to the forum. Just to prepare you - this is how every thread goes. But you can usually sift through the shenanigans of Sas and Wayne to find some credible responses...

You guys are all wrong. Nate told me he was a hand model. Who has better hands than a pipe maker, really?

Scars, stain, blood, those can all be airbrushed out.

You guys are mad.....LOL!!!!!

Thanks alot for the warm (read weird !!!) welcome... Great to see a buch of guys having fun, and enjoying themselves! With time, you'll learn I can be a crazy SOB myself....

Bought more stuff today; drill bits, forstner bits, carnuba / tripoli/ white diamond, a chuck for my tailstock with Mt1 adaptor, and finishing the wiring on the lathe switch. Just need to tie some loose ends, and I'll be ready to start carving soon. Until then, I'll be reading posts on here, to assimilate as much info as possible.

BTW, english is my fourth language (french, italian and spanish came first), so I may make mistakes while writing, so my apologies in advance on that!

Gianni

Ps: I'll be creating a post about it, but I'll be needing a Pimo tenon tool,

If you want my advice, use delrin tenons over the Pimo tool. But if you have a lathe, why not turn them on there....?

Oh man...we've got intellectual on here now. English is his fourth language, and he already writes better than most of us. We're in trouble... :D

A very warm welcome to you! You'll like it here. And, seriously, four languages is impressive.

I have to agree with Cory. If you've got a lathe, skip the Pimo tool. Your lathe will do a much MUCH better job.
