Hey, so I'm looking into trying some bamboo shank stuff on a pipe, and I was wondering what kind of steel tubing is being used inside the bamboo, is there anything special I should know about the process before I mess up a pipe?

Use stainless steel tube or hypodermic tube.


In order not to get your pipe looking like a mess, try drilling the bamboo with lots of ways.

Morisers ans then airway on hand

Mortisers, attach tenon then airway to the other end

Airway first

and any other way you think it might help you.

Find out which way works best for you.

The way I do bamboo now is really simple and easy.

Take bamboo in left hand.

Open garbage can with right hand.

Insert Bamboo.

While chatting on G+ the other night Nate gave me a great idea. I use tubing cutters, and I complained about not being able to grip the tubing. He said he uses his lathe...brilliant!

So I now use a tubing cutter (one of the small ones), and chuck up the tubing. I turn the chuck by hand. Cut in no time.

I then use a countersink on each end, as the tubing cutter will roll the edge.

I use my dremel with an abrasive cutting disk. Takes a couple seconds. Done in no time. Just gotta prep the ends so you don't carve more out of your bamboo or stummel.

I get my ss tube from a refridgerated unit maker, .5 walls up to 5mm and 1mm walls 5-10mm.

If you ever need to bend it pack it with sand first.

I use McMaster-Carr part #6100K129 for most things, and #6100K125 for some. It's hard temper stainless tube, the first 3/16" OD and the other 5/32". They are just over 5/32" ID and 9/64" OD respectively.
