I like the idea of a foot-powered sander, but I think a treadle would be better for keeping things steady. I have a collector friend who has a number of foot-powered lathes, and I reckon a sewing machine treadle could be adapted. Me, I ran a quarter-horse 3-phase motor off a frequency drive and control it with a foot pedal. I replaced the pot in an old wah pedal so I can vary the speed without taking hands off the work.

That's not a bad idea. You can pick up an old Singer treadle for next to nothing. Sure would be easier than peddeling a bike.
