Mini Mill!

Post by smokindawg »

I know I don't make pipes on it, but use it to make tools to make pipes.

I upgraded my Sherline mill recently. It works great, but was a bit small for what I want to do and try to do.

So I purchased a G8689 from Grizzly. I drove to Springfield to pick it up and also picked up some end mills and fly cutters as well as a new vice. I got it home and have played with it just a bit.

I quickly found that I'd like to put a DRO on it for quick set up and repeatability. So with some cash from selling a few things I got one on ebay and it's on it's way here as I type.

Next I'd like to build a powerfeed for the table and will start on that after I get the DRO set up on the mill. As with many China made machines, there are lots of upgrades and changes that can be made.

I'm looking forward to learning to use this mill to it's potential and seeing what I can make with both the new mill and the lathe.

Now I just need to sell off the Sherline to get the $$$ too purchase more tools and upgrade parts.

This is the Mill that I got.

I'm about 100 miles from Springfield. Live 35 miles south of Rolla.

I'm actually in Springfield quite often as my wife goes up once a month for medicine infusions.

I hear you Chris...... This one should prove to be very useful.

The sherline I have was useful, just wasn't quite big enough for me at times.

Scotties, where do you live now?

Just picked up a nice and very reasonably priced DRO (Digital Read Out) kit for the mill. Never been installed and got it for $211 shipped, on ebay. Got it yesterday and it looks good and works fine. I just need to get the scales mounted on the mill, which will need mounts made to fit my machine.

I also was in Springfield again yesterday and picked up a clamping kit for it from Grizzly. I needed one and the price wasn't bad either.

It's coming together. I'll be back making tall jaws for the nova and other chucks soon.
