First practice piece on metal lathe...
I know it's just a piece of cherry, but I am already addicted. This metal lathe rocks. I have plenty more to accomplish before I try briar, but I have to fix my tailstock first. Parts should be in soon.
Throw any help my way guys. The more I am told the less I will screw up.
I love the exactness.

Re: First practice piece on metal lathe...
So I guess all holes are done with the tailstock and chucked drill bit, unless you wanted to make a bowl with a smaller cutting tool... Is there a difference either way?
Re: First practice piece on metal lathe...
Probably just time. It's pretty easy just to drill with the tail stock. Some freehand the bowl shape with turning tools. Others, like myself, use the apron to accomplish the rough bowl shape. It all depends on familiarity and being comfortable.Gershom wrote:So I guess all holes are done with the tailstock and chucked drill bit, unless you wanted to make a bowl with a smaller cutting tool... Re: First practice piece on metal lathe...
Oh yes, and if you decide to 'cut' the chamber instead of drilling, you'll need extra cutters or turning tools.
Re: First practice piece on metal lathe...
I never thought to use my apron for shaping the bowl.

Re: First practice piece on metal lathe...
It is a Jet BD920N. A bit used, but I have just finished fixing everything (I think) and now I must find an MT-2 Drill Chuck.
Anyone want to part with one?
