I got a block of olive wood as a gift when I ordered briar last time. I cut of a piece from that block to try and see if I could turn it on my lathe. Well, I sort of could... The drilling was a bit tricky though. And I also wanted to try to make a really thin bit, as practise.
Here it is. Critic is as always most welcome.

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Re: Poker again
I doubt it'll melt- might've been better to have a delrin tenon.
As is though, that's a nice thin bit you got there! My criticism is your slot is off center though Just take a bit more care when cutting it. Widening it to final dimension with needle files also helps.

Super cool stummel. I really like the minimalist design.
Re: Poker again
It is a tiny bit off center although not as much as it looks on the pic. And the problem is more that I sanded off one side of the bit more than the other. The Smoking Yeti wrote: As is though, that's a nice thin bit you got there! I too have wondered about this, I love the look. Dunhill makes some of these, but they are reinforced with metal at the stem/bowl juncture.the rev wrote:I always wondered about this... wont the mortise melt?

Re: Poker again
How heavy is olive compared to briar?
Re: Poker again
I have no idea how it is in general. I'm sure there's someone out there who could answer that. This pipe is maybe a bit on the heavy side for it size. It weighs 48 gram.Blueb3 wrote:How heavy is olive compared to briar?
I can also report that the stem did not melt after the first smoke. I have also learned that shape of the stem is probably more important to the comfort feel than thiness.
