Router Sled to square up briar?
Re: Router Sled to square up briar?
I just chuck the block in the lathe and square it, quite simple really if you have a lathe.

Yeah, Isn't square the one thing a lathe can't do? Mine will only do round but it's pretty good at that.
Re: Router Sled to square up briar?
Umm... I guess the word I wanted is facing I just chuck the block sideways and face it on both sides.
Re: Router Sled to square up briar?
Just for shits-and-giggles I tried my router sled on a block to see how the router would do with this super tough material. After I had two parallel faces milled, I cut it square clamped safely in a table saw sled. Now I can make my first pipe!

I'm a sign-maker by trade, I gave myself an aggressive manicure with a dull OLFA blade last week. I havent made a pipe yet so your right I've got no credibility on this forum at all. LOLSasquatch wrote:9 stitches in any finger takes a LOT of credibility from methodology photographs.

Yeah you can't rate a guy's skill based on how many digits he has. I know a few guys who were unlucky early on and ... they just don't grow back.
I just thought it was funny for the thread.

Funny- I thought the exact same thing as you Sas- too bad about the stitches though man
I work hard to keep outta the stub club personally. Worst I've done is shove a dull screwdriver underneath my thumbnail- still makes me gag when I think about it.

I use a 6" belt sander that has an adjustable metal shelf attachment, works fast and easy. Craigslist fix ups.
Re: Router Sled to square up briar?
I use... oh yeah. Hah. I forgot. I shape first. We don't need no stinkin' squared blocks!

Huh. Most people shape before drilling to maximize the grain. Why do you do it, Uber?

My tools of choice are a good block plane (razor-sharp cutter!) and a machinist's square. Usually I only do two adjacent surfaces, which are my reference surfaces on the drill press.

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course
